# 2 John Swope Forney Farm

Image
The John Swope Forney farm was located south of the Oak Hill summit along the Mummasburg Road, northwest of the town of Gettysburg. On July 1, 1863, Confederate soldiers marched across the property heading in the direction of the camera in the above photo. They clashed with the Union 1st Corps along Oak Ridge.  If you look closely at the top photo just to the right of the driveway, you may be able to locate the monument of the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry. This provides a perspective to the actual location of the farm. The decision to tear down the original farm, which had fallen into disrepair, was made in the 1930's. Since the structure existed at the time of the battle, that decision is controversial with modern historians.  This modern view is facing east, towards Oak Ridge, just a couple steps north of the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry Monument. During Confederate Robert E. Rodes' advance, units from Alabama and North Carolina were involved in fighting near the tree filled area,...

# 1 The Location Of The Wounding Of General Winfield Scott Hancock

Image
We are all knowledgeable of General Winfield Scott Hancock's competence and capabilities. His outstanding abilities in military tactics and leadership during battle made him one of the most valuable Union Army Generals. However, he was seriously wounded during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, during the Confederate assault of the Union center. There is a marker located on Cemetery Ridge identifying the approximate location. The marker is some distance from and not among the more popular ones at "The Angle" where the majority of tourists stop. Its placement on the west side of the road in tall weeds can make it easily overlooked and passed by.  .                                                                                             ...

Historic Cashtown Inn, Orrtanna, Pennsylvania

Image
The planned mid-week post near Maryland was postponed by...CORN ?!?!?! YES, about 8-9 foot stalks obscured the view in all directions...but fortunately all the history in the area provided an important substitute. Situated along the old Chambersburg Pike, the Cashtown Inn witnessed columns of Confederate soldiers marching and riding to the eventual Battle of Gettysburg as well as their retreat afterwards. https://cashtowninn.com https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cashtown_Inn Distance from the National Civil War Museum, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: 44.5 miles.                        https://www.gallon.com       New video series:  https://youtu.be/mBDOQHaR5Wo?si=Dd5we4CVhSMSsJvv                      Please follow us on Facebook at  American History Travels | Facebook                           ...
